About White Bear Lake
When Minnesota became a state in 1858, a large group of European-American settlers formed White Bear Lake Township. The township consisted of 36 square miles of land. Eventually, people learned of the beautiful scenery in the area and tourists made their way up the Mississippi, then to White Bear Lake via train. Eventually, the township became a resort area with lodging, restaurants, and entertainment establishments set up shop. Notably, Mark Twain referenced White Bear Lake as the resort in his book Life on the Mississippi.
After the turn of the century, the resort life began to fall away and other industries such as farming and lumbering continued to flourish. With the increased traffic and businesses beginning to grow, White Bear Lake was incorporated in 1921. The new city was just 2.25 square miles in size, but grew to 7 square miles by the 1950’s as the residential communities surged in size.
As of the 2010 census, there are almost 24,000 residents in White Bear Lake. The residents characterize their community as having a “strong spirit of volunteerism and progressive approach to opportunities.” The vision set for the city leadership is to create an environment that is welcoming and fosters a true sense of community for residents, businesses, and visitors.
