About Maplewood
In 1850, a group of families from St Paul set out to establish a community for themselves. Upon arriving in the area now known as Maplewood, they found that the Dakota Indians used that area for hunting. After being turned away initially, the settlers were allowed to return in 1853 after the Dakota lost to the Ojibway at Battle Creek.
As the community grew, a stagecoach line was established that ran from St Paul to Duluth until the St Paul and Duluth Railroad was established in 1877. As the local railroad system increased, William and Mary Dawson purchased a large plot of land for the formation of a city that was to rival St Paul. This area was named Gladstone, after a popular British statesman. However, due to a series of unfortunate events, the main industry there failed and people left the virtual ghost town.
Throughout the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, soon-to-be Maplewood went through a number of village names, changes in size, and splitting and merging with the surrounding villages. The stabilizing factor came when 3M decided to build their Central Research Laboratory along Highway 12 in New Canada Township. When St Paul threatened to annex more land from the township, the residents voted to incorporate as a village in 1957. Ed O’Mara suggested the name “Maplewood” for the new township.
The Maplewood village departments were eventually consolidated into a single municipal building which took a very long time to complete. Over time, as more people came to the area and required more of the village resources, Maplewood became a city in 1982.
Today, Maplewood consists of about 40,000 people and features many local businesses, retail chains, residential neighborhoods, and the 3M research facility. The city boasts a nature center, many trails and paths, a golf course, and community gardens.
